A Bit of Fun with a Lawn Edger

The only sort of stuff like that we used was some green, greasy stuff when cutting threads. I quickly found it made cutting easier if it was rubbed onto a hacksaw blade. I'd still got a small pot of it which I 'liberated.'

Ah-Ha! I know the stuff you're referring to Joe - that's 'Trefolex' cutting compound!
I have a large red-coloured tin of that in the 'shop: I acquired in years & years ago. And very useful stuff it is too.

That sounds about right. The tin at school was so bashed and dirty that the writing couldn't be deciphered by I do seem to recall a vestige of red paint.

I had a spray can of synthetic lubricant once and it smelt of pear drops. Why can't they all be pleasant in odour?

Hi Roger,
Smell of 'Pear Drops' eh? I do believe that's the amyl acetate. Anyway, I like the small of 'Pear drops'. Each to his own, I suppose.

Whilst we've shifted a little sideways into the smell of engineering lubricants, here's a little anecdote.

It was many years ago, when I was a very enthusiastic biker: "Brit Twins", to be a little more precise. Now I then had the strange notion that keeping the back chain well-lubricated enabled me to go faster. (Obsessions generate a distorted view of reality). So, with the aid of the frying pan and the gas cooker in the kitchen, I boiled up the chain in molydenum disulphide grease: lovely stuff: all slippery, black and wonderfully greasy. But I failed to appreciate the God-awful stink it created! Err, I was soon "told" - and in no uncertain terms, either! Oh, and yes, the frying pan was replaced soon after, too! Subsequently, on Sunday mornings, I then strictly avoided politely enquiring "Anyone fancy a fry-up?" Whoops!

I've boiled my chainsaw chains in engine oil (a grade I have loads of, but don't have a car that takes it any more) to get the muck out from the links. But I did it outside on a camping gas stove as I suspected it'd smell nasty. In actuality it wasn't that bad.

But I don't think I'd have got away with using a frying pan!

Yes, Richard: "frying pan"  :s  : I know, I know!
But all of that was many, many years ago. I was badly bitten by the Motorcycling Bug: I was young and naive - and stupid! Hopefully, most of those 'characteristics' have faded with the passing years - especially the last one!

Just to get back to the original topic it does work, and it hasn't failed - splendid! Whether I'm up to it is another matter
