Oh, dear.
Does that imply that there's something more subtle going on inside the switches? or is it your 'extra connection' that makes it odd on that range?

Hi Alan,

One connection is labelled 'LP' which I thought may mean Low Potential and the other two have an 'S' between them. The red terminal you can just see in my photo above is one of the 'S' terminals. I've no thoughts on what 'S' may mean other than Series, maybe?

I'm not sure I want to delve too deeply into those switches, it may have to remain a 8K decade resistance box for the foreseeable future

Sorry for digging out old this old topic, but maybe this could be interesting for someone. This device is for measuring precise DC voltages using standard cell, DC 2V source and galvanometer.
Its takes about one hour yesterday to figure out what this device is for and how its works

It was when I was studying for GCE 'A' level Physics that I first met the slide-wire potentiometer. It was used for the precise measurement of d.c. voltages, as pupsik46 has pointed out.
